Escaping Extinction

Player Aid

Round Structure

Each round, all 4 Dinos take their turns one at a time (oldest player goes first; play continues clockwise). Turn order stays the same every round. After all Dinos have taken their turn, draw a Meteor card and resolve it.

On their turn, each Dino may take up to 2 Actions. The same action may be taken twice.

Actions

Travel (Move): Spend 1 Food token and move to an adjacent terrain tile. If the destination tile is facedown, flip it face-up and place the matching resource token on it (if it has a resource icon). If you have no Food, you cannot Travel.

Explore: If there is a resource token on your current tile, take it and add it to your Dino card. Then draw and read an Exploration card. If there is no resource token, just draw and read an Exploration card. Tiles with no resource icon can still be Explored (card only). The Oasis tile and Volcano tile cannot be Explored.

Resupply (Oasis only): In one action, a Dino refills their Food from the Supply, moves any Vines from their Dino card to the Launchpad, and (if carrying a Rocket Part) places it on the Launchpad. Can only be used when your Dino is on the Oasis tile.

Some Exploration cards grant additional special actions - follow the card's instructions.

Rocket Docket

The Rocket Docket deck represents Dr. Raptor's demands for Rocket Parts. One card starts revealed face-up. Each card states exactly how and where to gather the next Rocket Part.

Meteor Cards

After all Dinos have taken their turn, draw the top Meteor card and move the Meteor forward on the track. If the Meteor reaches the end of the track, the players lose.

EARTHQUAKE card: When drawn, flip all terrain tiles (except the Oasis and any tiles occupied by Dinos) face down, re-shuffle them, and place them facedown around the remaining tiles. Return any resource tokens on the shuffled tiles to the Supply. The Meteor moves BACK 1 space on the track. There are 3 EARTHQUAKE cards in the Meteor deck (1 in the first 5 cards, 1 in the middle 4, 1 in the last 4).

Tiles occupied by a Dino are unaffected by an EARTHQUAKE and stay face-up in the same position. Their resources (if any) will not be replenished by the reshuffle.

Trading

When two Dinos are on the same terrain tile, they can Trade any number of items freely - Food, Wood, Vines, Rocket Parts (limit 1 per Dino), and held Exploration cards. Trading does not cost an Action. Dinos can trade even if one of them is Injured (but not if both are Injured).

Damage, Health, and Healing

Some cards or tiles cause Dinos to take Damage. Reduce the Health meter by the amount of damage dealt.

Special Terrain - Tarpit

Traveling onto the Tarpit has no special effect. Traveling away costs 2 Food instead of 1.

If short on Food, a Dino can attempt to leave using only 1 Food: roll the die. Roll a 3 = success, move to the chosen tile. Any other result = fail; the Dino stays on the Tarpit and both the Action and Food are wasted.

Special Terrain - Volcano

When a Dino Travels onto the Volcano tile (including when it is first revealed), the controlling player must roll the die and take damage equal to the result. Traveling out of the Volcano uses 1 Food as normal and causes no damage.

Special Token - Lava Flow

An Exploration card may instruct you to place the Lava Flow token on your current tile. Any Dino that Travels onto a tile with the Lava Flow token takes 1 damage. Traveling out causes no damage. During an EARTHQUAKE, if the tile is shuffled, return the Lava Flow token to the Supply.

Special Tokens - Secret Caves

An Exploration card may instruct you to place the two Secret Cave tokens. Place one on your current tile and one on any other terrain tile (even a facedown one). Secret Cave tokens cannot be placed on the Oasis.

When a Dino on a Secret Cave tile takes the Travel Action, they may move directly to the other Secret Cave tile for free (no Food). If the destination is facedown, remove the token, flip the tile face-up, then replace the token. Using a Secret Cave from the Tarpit still costs 1 Food.

During an EARTHQUAKE: if a tile with a Secret Cave is shuffled, temporarily remove the token and place it back on the facedown tile in the same physical location. If an Exploration card instructs you to place Secret Cave tokens and they are already placed, you may change their locations.
