Hero Setup

Choose 2 to 5 heroes. For each:

• Meeple
• Power card under the left side of the board
• Hero board
• Red cube on 5 Health
• Blue cube on the Orb symbol

Monster Setup

Shuffle Monster markers and put them in the Monster bag

Card Decks Setup

Shuffle and place separately:

• Loot cards
• Event cards
• Boss cards
• Thorns cards
• Inn cards for Inn mini-expansion
• Lair A and Lair B cards in seperate piles for Lairs mini-expansion

Forest Setup

1. Set aside the Forest Start tile and the Boss tile.
2. If playing with Forest only: Place the Start tile in the center. If playing with Swamp, use swamp start tile instead.
3. Shuffle the Forest tiles into a stack.
4. Take two tiles and shuffle the Boss tile into them. Then, place these on the bottom of the stack so the Boss appears near the end.

Swamp Setup

1. Place the Swamp Start tile.
2. Shuffle the 8 River tiles and lay them one by one to form a continuous stretch, ending with the Swamp Boss tile.
3. Place the Rowboat on the Swamp Start tile.

Begin Game

Objectives

WIN (Core): Find and defeat the Boss lurking in the forest.

WIN (Wildscale Swamps): Defeat two Bosses - one in the forest and one at the end of the river.

LOSE:

• The Threat Track cube moves beyond the last space, OR
• All Heroes are knocked down simultaneously.

Difficulty Adjustments

Easier:

• Heroes start with 1 or more Orbs.
• Use the Easy Thorns card

Harder:

• Play with Enraged Monsters and/or Enraged Bosses
• Use the Difficult Thorns card
